न्यूयॉर्क। भारतीय मूल के रविंदर भल्ला अमेरिका के न्यूजर्सी स्थित होबोकेन शहर के पहले सिख मेयर बने हैं। पूर्व मेयर डॉन जिमर ने बीते जून में ही चुनाव में भाग ना लेने का निर्णय लेते हुए भल्ला का समर्थन किया था। इसके बावजूद भल्ला को चुनाव में कड़ी प्रतिस्पर्धा का सामना करना पड़ा। यही नहीं, आतंकवादी बताकर उनकी राह रोकने की कोशिश भी हुई थी।
भल्ला पिछले सात साल से होबोकेन सिटी काउंसिल का हिस्सा थे। काउंसिल के सदस्य माइकल डीफस्को, जेनिफर गियाटिनो और एंथोनी रोमानो समेत छह प्रतिद्वंद्वियों को पीछे छोड़कर भल्ला ने जीत हासिल की। जीत के बाद समर्थकों से भल्ला ने कहा, मुझमें, मेरे समुदाय और मेरे देश में विश्वास दिखाने के लिए आपका शुक्रिया। हमें अब एक साथ काम कर शहर को आगे लेकर जाना है।
चुनाव के दौरान भल्ला के खिलाफ पर्चे भी बांटे गए थे। उसमें लिखा था, हमारे शहर को आतंकवाद के कब्जे में ना जाने दें। इस पर भल्ला ने भी अपनी प्रतिक्रिया में कहा था, आतंकवाद को हमारे शहर पर कब्जा ना करने दें।
